Personal Coaching & Strength Training

New Zealand Coaching

Generic programs can be effective, but nothing replaces getting to know an individual’s strengths & weaknesses and being able to coach around this knowledge. Good coaching requires a sound knowledge of the sport, exercise physiology, strength training, nutrition, psychology and injury mechanisms & prevention. I take on 20 athletes per season, and do my best to help them reach their potential as athletes!

Fee includes:

  • One physiological bike and/or run testing with the start up
  • Regular consultations regarding training, race debriefing, racing nutrition, bike & run technique, altitude, acclimatization to the heat, etc.
  • Weekly training programs
  • On-line training diary enabling accurate volume tracking
  • Periodized season plan.

Cost: $300 start up & monthly fee

 

Online Monthly Coaching

Fee includes:

  • Periodized Season Plan
  • Monthly strength & endurance training programs
  • Email and skype contact with the coach

Strength Training

I am the lead strength & conditioner for Triathlon New Zealand and Wintersport New Zealand which is an honour, and challenges my knowledge of strength training for both explosive & cyclical sports. As a coach I am a big believer in the value of strength for endurance sports – it prevents injuries, and if performed concurrently with training, will improve endurance performance via changes in force production & movement economy. Strength training will help skiers & snowboarders deal with the gravitational forces of landing! Masters athletes need strength training for the same reasons, but also to prevent muscle mass loss that is associated with aging.

 

Physiological Testing for Runners and Cyclists

Physiological testing will show up your strengths and weaknesses as an endurance athlete. I have been testing athletes ranging from recreational to internationally elite athletes since 1997, and feel that it is a very important piece of the endurance training puzzle. During the tests I will also be reviewing your bike & run biomechanics and may be able to give you ideas to get you faster by working on any technique weaknesses!

 

Lactate Threshold Testing:

A lactate threshold test will provide you with the following information:

  • Accurate heart rate training zones
  • Peak aerobic power wattage (cycling) & run velocity
  • Lactate & anaerobic threshold (helps predict training & race pacing)
  • Technique feedback – eg. Pedal stroke mechanics, bilateral power differences, run technique evaluation

Cost: $150-$180 per test (depends on protocol used)

 

Lactate Threshold Re-Testing

On-going lactate testing using the same protocol may provide you with further information:

  • Training progression – if you are physiologically responding well or poorly to your training regime. It will help re-establish training & race pacing.
  • Glycogen depletion – if you are under-nourishing yourself around test times
  • Technique – if it has changed
  • Overtraining or fatigue
  • Lactate tests are cycling, run & triathlon specific.

Cost: $150-$180 per test (depends on protocol used)

Coaching Clinics

I really enjoy working with groups of endurance athletes. The goal of group training & clinics is to be able to help a wider range of recreational athletes with their training; help network groups of endurance athletes with each other; and provide fun weekly sessions to keep up the motivation up!

 

Peak Endurace

The Peak Endurance Training Clinic. July - January

This clinic is designed to help athletes reach their goals in the Challenge Wanaka ½ Iron and Iron distance events. Periodized programs build to the January Challenge Wanaka race, however we also have cyclists and runners involved in the clinic doing events ranging from the Kepler Challenge, Coast to Coast and other events. Weekly meetings about topics important to endurance athletes – Nutrition & Endurance-specific nutrition; bike & run technique; bike technical advice; pilates; Prevention & treatment of injuries; recovery methods....plus programs given out. Our goal is to help you....Reach your Peak as an endurance athlete and work together as a community of endurance athletes. You can join us any time – email me!

 

Strength Training Circuits for Runners & Cyclists

These classes are designed to strengthen muscle groups specific to running, cycling & nordic skiing; prevent overuse injuries by targeting muscle imbalances & tight muscle groups specific to these sports; and add stability & power to your core. The class will progress throughout the term and provides the education to facilitate your own gym training.

 

Triathlon Clinics - Sprint to Ironman Distances

Clinics include: weekly meetings and training sessions; education; support & weekly training plans.
We will also do run interval and triathlon training groups.
